Sons Explains: What is omeprazole?

06 July 2022
2-minute read

Omeprazole is a drug called a ‘proton pump inhibitor’ (PPI) that is widely used to treat heartburn and mild acid reflux. Available in capsule form, omeprazole should be taken just before eating and can alleviate uncomfortable symptoms for many men. In this article, we explain what omeprazole is and how you might benefit from taking it during your pre-meal routine.

Introducing omeprazole

Omeprazole is a medication that has been scientifically proven to be effective at treating heartburn and mild acid reflux. The medication is also sometimes used to treat ulcers and other stomach issues when prescribed by a doctor. More broadly, omeprazole is part of a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

The drugs work to reduce the amount of stomach acid made by glands in your stomach lining. In addition to omeprazole, lansoprazole and pantoprazole are over the counter medications that you can buy from your pharmacy to treat heartburn and other issues with your gut.

The benefits of taking omeprazole

The primary benefit of taking omeprazole is to treat heartburn and acid reflux, a condition that is far from pleasant and can cause discomfort throughout the day. Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into the oesophagus after eating.

Some foods can trigger heartburn more than others, with spicy dishes, tomato products, and fatty and fried foods being among the worst culprits. By decreasing the amount of acid your stomach produces, omeprazole can effectively treat heartburn and acid reflux, alleviating or completely removing the symptoms for some people.

Sons’ omeprazole treatment

At Sons, our omeprazole treatment comes in the form of 20mg capsules. We recommend taking one tablet thirty minutes before eating, and each pack contains 28 tablets. When taken consistently, they can help alleviate the symptoms associated with heartburn and mild acid reflux and are a viable option where antacids are ineffective. However, if you don’t see a reduction in your symptoms after taking omeprazole, you should schedule an appointment with a medical professional to learn if you would benefit from stronger medication.

When to see a doctor

Omeprazole should only be used to treat mild cases of heartburn and acid reflux. If you have persistent heartburn or you experience symptoms more than twice a week, it’s important to check in with your doctor to get to the bottom of your symptoms.

In addition to our omeprazole tablets, you may also benefit from our gut health supplement. Containing the live bacterial strain LP299V, our gut health supplement can help to improve the general condition of your gut microbiome. So, if you are experiencing general issues with your digestion, start your free consultation to see if you will benefit from a combination of omeprazole and our gut health supplement.
