DHT 101: Sons Explained

What is DHT?

In the simplest terms, DHT is a male sex hormone that causes hair loss in men.

In scientific terms, DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is an androgen hormone that is a by-product of Testosterone metabolism. Men with an inherited genetic sensitivity to this hormone can experience hair loss as the DHT will bind to their hair follicles causing them to shink, which in turn causes the hair itself to shrink and eventually causing the follicle to die off. This process is known as miniaturisation and can take place over a number of years..

What is DHT blocker?

A DHT blocker is an agent that can block the production of DHT and/or prevent it from binding to your hair follicles. The most commonly used DHT blocker is Finasteride, which is licensed at a 1mg dose to treat male pattern hair loss. There are also natural DHT blockers, such as Saw Palmetto, which is frequently used in hair loss shampoos and is thought to help treat male pattern hair loss.

Do DHT blocking shampoos really work?

DHT blocking shampoos are an important part of a complete hair loss treatment package. However, they are proven to be less effective on their own. Most likely men that use a DHT blocking shampoo will experience some improvements in hair quality but there is limited evidence on their efficacy in hair regrowth.

The proven way to prevent the production and effects of DHT are with a combination of Finasteride and Minoxidil - the only two FDA approved medications to treat hair loss.

How to naturally stop DHT

Committing to a healthy lifestyle of regular exercise, a balanced diet, reduced stress and a good sleeping pattern can help to reduce DHT, but only in incredibly small amounts. The only way to stop DHT is through the use of Finasteride.

Finasteride is one of two FDA approved medications to treat hair loss (which is driven by a sensitivity to DHT), the other is Minoxidil. When used in combination, this duo is proven to be the most effective hair loss treatment.

Are DHT blockers bad for you?

Around 5% of the men that take a DHT blocker (such as Finasteride or a DHT blocking shampoo) will experience negative side effects, but these side effects are almost always temporary.

If you have begun to notice your hair thinning, you are most likely sensitive to the effects of DHT. Getting in touch sooner rather than later can help you to save as much hair as possible - take out online consultation today.
