Minoxidil: How long does it take to work

What is Minoxidil and how does it work?

Alongside Finasteride, using Minoxidil once a day is one of the most popular and successful methods of fighting male pattern baldness - the cause of which is a sensitivity to DHT, a hormone which leads to the shrinking of hair follicles within your scalp. 

Minoxidil is a vasodilator, which means it can actively combat this process by expanding the blood vessels in your scalp, therefore promoting healthy blood flow. With this increased blood flow, the starved hair follicles in your scalp are fed a greater amount of oxygen and nutrients. Ultimately, if your hair follicles are happy, your hair is happy.

How long does Minoxidil take to work?

Whilst Minoxidil starts working immediately, it can take more than 6 months for you to notice visible results. Minoxidil improves blood flow to your hair follicles which in turn supplies an increase of nutrients to new hair strands. As your hair growth cycle takes between 3 and 6 months to reach the growth stage, the benefits of this process will only be noticeable once old hairs have shed and new hairs have taken their place. 

In some men, this process can cause an acceleration of the hair growth cycle, which will lead to an initial increase in the hair that sheds from the scalp. However, this is a sign that the medication is working. Ultimately, long term and regular use of Minoxidil should lead to improved hair quality, as well an increase in hair density.

Is Minoxidil effective?
