DHT Blocking Shampoos: How They Work

22 June 2023
1-minute read

DHT-blocking shampoos have become increasingly popular in men looking to slow the process of hair loss. But what is DHT and why do we want to block it?

What is DHT?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a breakdown product of testosterone metabolism in the body. There’s a link between high levels of this hormone and male pattern hair loss, as there is  with prostate growth in men. As an androgen, your male characteristics are formed partly thanks to DHT. However, some men produce too much DHT or have a sensitivity towards it which can have unwanted effects.

Why do we want to block DHT?

Some men (if they have inherited the familial gene that causes hair loss), can start to experience male pattern hair loss because DHT causes hairs to undergo miniaturisation. By blocking DHT, treatments aim to halt this hair loss process and stop any further miniaturisation. Doing this allows your hair follicles to accept vital nutrients which help new and healthy strands grow.

The Purpose of DHT-Blocking Shampoo

DHT shampoos, such as Son’s DHT-blocking shampoo, contain natural ingredients which can firstly halt the miniaturisation effects that DHT can cause and improve the overall quality of your hair by using ingredients with natural DHT-blocking properties, such as Saw Palmetto. Sons recommends using this treatment as an adjunct to scientifically-proven hair loss treatments, to improve the quality and rate of your hair growth.

Can DHT blocking shampoo be used with other hair loss treatments?

DHT-blocking shampoo works well when used with other hair loss supplements. Ideally, twinning the shampoo with finasteride and minoxidil is a good way to maximise the treatments available. Sons has numerous topical and oral medication plans to select from that can be used in conjunction with DHT-blocking shampoo. These treatments increase the blood flow to the scalp which then in turn revitalise the follicles that have been affected by DHT.

Act now

As with anything, it is usually best to take control of the situation sooner rather than later and hair loss is no different. Whenever you spot the early signs of a receding hairline or thinning hair, it is best to see what the best plan of action is for you.
