DHT is the main cause of hair loss in men and plays a big role in the degradation of hair follicles. For men with a sensitivity to the hormone, there are a few ways to limit the impact that DHT can have on your hair. But what exactly is DHT and what does it do?
What is DHT?
DHT, otherwise known as (dihydrotestosterone), is an androgen hormone that is the by-product of testosterone. DHT has a few different roles, including developing certain male characteristics such as a deeper voice, facial hair and an Adam’s apple.
What does DHT do?
Unfortunately, for men with a genetic sensitivity to DHT, the hormone can also have a negative impact on the hair on their heads. With male pattern hair loss, DHT binds to hair follicles in your scalp and causes them to shrink through a process called miniaturisation and, eventually, die off.
DHT does this by reducing the growth phase of the hair cycle, which in turn makes hair follicles finer. In the latter stages of the hair loss process, hair follicles do not end up entering the final stages of the cycle and fail to break through the skin. The result? The eventual death of the hair follicles on your scalp.
How to inhibit the effects of DHT
While DHT can have a significant impact on your hair, that doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. Finasteride and Minoxidil are two medications clinically proven to revitalise your hair follicles and inhibit the effects that DHT can have. Finasteride works by helping to block the production of DHT, while Minoxidil increases blood flow to the scalp and supplies hair follicles with the oxygen and nutrients they require to thrive. While both these medications can be used separately, Finasteride and Minoxidil work even more effectively when used together, whether in a combined Topical Spray or a hair loss treatment plan.
While Finasteride and Minoxidil are important, clinically proven medications in the fight against hair loss, there are other supplements and products that can help. Our Full Works Treatment Plan also contains Biotin and a DHT-Blocker Shampoo to help improve the health of your hair. For instance, Biotin is a B vitamin that helps to promote stronger and healthier hair already on your scalp, while our DHT-Blocker Shampoo contains a natural saw palmetto extract that may help to lower levels of DHT. Using all these medications and supplements together can give you the best chance of getting the hair loss results you’ve always wanted.
