Put simply, DHT is a male sex hormone that is the primary driver of hair loss in men.
Here's the science behind it:
DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is an androgen hormone that is a by-product of the production of testosterone. This biological relationship with testosterone means that DHT is one of the many hormones that contribute to male characteristics in men (e.g. deeper voices, Adam’s apple, facial hair). Conversely, this means that DHT is simultaneously one of the main reasons for hair loss and is a key hormone for hair growth in other areas of the body, such as your face and chest.
However, during the process of hair loss, DHT binds to the hair follicles in your scalp which leads to hair shrinkage and eventual hair loss. DHT reduces the growth phase of hair, making the follicles become finer and shorter. In the later stage of hair loss, this happens to an extent that the follicles do not enter the final growth phase whereby they break through the skin.
