What is Finasteride?

This article has been medically verified by Dr. Knut Moe - Medical Director at Sons

Finasteride is a medicine that is used to treat hair loss in men by reducing levels of DHT.

Here’s the science behind it:

During hair loss, DHT (dihydrotestosterone) attaches to the hair follicles which leads to hair shrinkage and hair loss. During this process, DHT shortens the hair growth phase which makes the follicles become finer, shorter and more brittle. In the later stage of hair loss, this happens to an extent that the follicles do not complete the final growth phase whereby they break through the skin.

Finasteride counteracts this process by inhibiting Type II 5α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. This inhibition prevents the build-up of DHT and prevents it from binding to the hair follicles.
