How to Wash Your Hair with Care

Washing your hair is an extremely important part of any hair care routine, but it’s something that many men take for granted. If you’re hoping to maintain a healthy and full head of hair, washing in the right way is crucial. Let’s begin by looking at how often you should wash your hair for the best results.

How often should you wash your hair?

First things first, you need to listen to your hair. While this sounds like we’re sitting on the fence, everyone’s hair is different and can react differently to a variety of products. If you have particularly oily hair and it feels unclean after a day at work, you should wash it each evening. However, if you feel like your hair stays fresh for longer, every few days is fine too. For most men, washing your hair 3 to 4 times a week or every other day is a good place to begin.

Tips for washing your hair the right way

More important than how often you wash your hair is how you go about it. Here are some tips to ensure you wash your hair with the care and attention required:

Use natural products where possible

Given the sheer number of hair care products on the market, it can be difficult to keep up. Clever marketing makes certain products seem better than others, and you may be enticed to try a brand because of an ingredient that seems almost magical in its effects. But the truth of the matter is that you should opt for products that contain natural products and avoid the likes of stearic acid, xanthan gum, and surfactants - all of which can contribute to an itchy or flaky scalp.

Condition regularly

While many of us recognise the importance of using shampoo regularly, we often only use conditioners once in a while. Despite this, conditioner plays a crucial role in the health of your hair by hydrating your follicles, softening your hair and reducing friction between strands. As a general rule of thumb, plan to condition after shampooing your hair and stop seeing it as a once-in-a-while product.

Use warm, not hot water

It’s also important to consider the temperature of the water you use to wash your hair. Scalding hot water can damage your scalp, as well as your hair follicles. As such, when you’re washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, crank the dial down a notch, so the water is warm, as opposed to too hot. This will protect your scalp and ensure the shampoo and conditioner can work their magic.

Don’t rinse too quickly

Once you’ve applied shampoo, you should gently massage your scalp for at least a minute before rinsing it out of your hair. Leave rinse-out conditioners in your hair for at least two minutes to give the product sufficient time to hydrate your hair follicles. So, if you’re in the bad habit of rinsing products out of your hair too quickly, make sure you change tack and leave them in for that little bit longer.

Consider hair treatment products

If you’ve noticed that your hair is thinning or if you have a receding hairline, you might be experiencing the early signs of male pattern hair loss. While there’s no need to panic, it’s a good idea to take action before it’s too late.
