If you’re starting to look a little thin on top, you might have to put a bit of extra work in to get the appearance of fuller, thicker hair (at least while you’re waiting for your Finasteride and Minoxidil treatment to kick in).
These helpful tips on styling thinning hair can help you look like you have more hair on your head wherever you are on your hair journey.
What haircut should I get?
The days of the dodgy combover are gone and most barbers can maximise the appearance of your hair without resorting to one. Be upfront with your barber about your hair loss - they will be able to help you choose a style which works for your pattern of loss and your hair type. It's worth noting that having a consistent relationship with your barber is important as they may need to work with you over a few haircuts to land on the best style for you.
Keeping the hair short on the sides and longer on top will give the appearance of added volume and help mask any sparse spots. Most men start to see recession in the temples first so going for longer on top means you can hide a receding hairline with a swept-over look, or by brushing the hair forwards over the temples.
If you want to reduce the thinning you might be starting to notice, applying Minoxidil 5% spray to your temples and any other thinning areas twice daily can help prevent any further hair loss, and even boost regrowth to reverse a receding hairline.
What products should I use?
A textured, messy look can help disguise thinning areas or bald spots, but choosing the right products to achieve the perfect tousled look is key. You want to avoid water-based products likes gels or mousses, as anything too wet can clump the hair together and make your hair look even thinner.
Instead, go for a texturizing clay like our Thickening Hair Clay, which has enough hold to add volume to the hair without weighing it down. Our clay is more than just style over substance - it’s also packed with ingredients like biotin and caffeine to support healthy hair.
Top tip: if you want to maximize volume, apply the clay to wet hair and then blow-dry. Lift the hair away from the scalp and blow-dry upwards on medium heat for an effortlessly thicker and fuller look.
What more can you do?
Give your scalp a helping hand by ditching shampoos and conditioners which are harsh and damaging. Choose good quality products which will nourish and protect your hair.
Sons Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner are made with saw palmetto, which is an extract which naturally combats the levels of DHT building up on the scalp, helping to reduce hair loss. DHT is a hormone which binds to and shrinks hair follicles, eventually leading to hair loss.
Sons are offering a free Hair Thickening Clay with every 3- and 6-month plans purchased during January (applies to first orders only), so if you’re ready to get a head start on tackling your hair loss with clinically proven treatments, check out our plans here.
