How you style your hair in the morning and evening alongside using Minoxidil Spray (or another topical hair treatment) matters more than you might think – not just for how your hair looks, but also for your results.

Minoxidil needs time to cross the skin barrier and reach the hair follicles, so rushing your routine or applying products in the wrong order could reduce how much is actually absorbed.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get it right – so you’re getting the most from your treatment while looking your best too.

Why timing is important

Research shows that around 50% of a 2% minoxidil solution is absorbed after one hour, and around 75% after four hours. This is why giving your Minoxidil Spray enough time to dry is key for the best results.

In general, 5% minoxidil is considered the most effective strength for treating male pattern hair loss, which we cover in more detail in another blog.

How to style your hair with Minoxidil Spray

1. Apply the Minoxidil Spray

Always start with completely dry hair and scalp. Applying to wet or damp hair can dilute the solution, which may reduce how much is absorbed.

Focus on applying directly to the scalp, not the hair itself. Minoxidil works on the hair follicles beneath the skin, so applying it to your hair won’t help.

That’s why Sons Minoxidil Spray is designed with a long, precision applicator. If you have longer hair, it can help to part your hair and work in sections.

You can use your fingertips to gently massage the solution into your scalp to spread it evenly.

2. Wait for Minoxidil to dry

Wait at least 15–30 minutes before moving on to the next step in your routine. This gives the minoxidil enough time to dry properly.

3. Style as normal

Once dry, you can apply your usual styling products, such as mousses, clays, or gels.

Try to keep styling products on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, rather than the scalp, to avoid disturbing the treatment.

Tips to keep your hair looking its best

Some people find that Minoxidil Spray can leave their hair looking greasy or flat. Here are a few simple ways to manage that:

  • Focus the spray on the scalp, avoiding the hair itself
  • Stick to the recommended dosage
  • Use thickening or volumising products to add lift and create the appearance of fuller hair

If you experience irritation

If you notice redness, itchiness, or flakiness, you might be sensitive to propylene glycol, a common ingredient in Minoxidil Spray.

For some people, this settles after a few weeks as the scalp adjusts. But if irritation persists, Minoxidil Spray might not be the right fit for you.

There are versions of minoxidil available without this ingredient. Alternatively, Oral Minoxidil delivers the same active ingredient in a once-daily capsule, rather than through the scalp.
