Minoxidil is no newcomer to the world of hair restoration. In fact, it was the first medication approved by the US FDA for treating hair loss, receiving approval back in 1996. Since then, it has been extensively researched and widely used, with countless men benefiting from this clinically proven treatment.

After decades of studies and real-world application, topical Minoxidil remains a safe and effective solution for male pattern hair loss. It works by boosting blood flow to the scalp and revitalising shrinking hair follicles—helping to slow shedding and encourage regrowth.

Why 5% Minoxidil Is the Most Effective Strength

Minoxidil is available in various strengths, ranging from 2% to 15%, but only the 2% and 5% topical solutions are FDA-approved for treating hair loss. Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated that 5% Minoxidil delivers significantly better results than the 2% version, offering stronger and faster regrowth with minimal additional risk.

While higher concentrations like 10% or 15% are available, the evidence supporting their use is inconsistent and not robust enough to recommend them over the 5% formulation. Based on current clinical data, 5% remains the preferred choice among dermatologists and hair loss experts worldwide—striking the ideal balance between effectiveness and tolerability.

Understanding Shedding and Scalp Irritation

It’s not uncommon for users to notice increased shedding of small, miniaturised hairs during the first 1–3 months of using Minoxidil. This is completely normal—and actually a positive sign that the treatment is working by accelerating the hair cycle and pushing follicles into a new growth phase.

Scalp irritation, while relatively rare, is the next most commonly reported side effect. In most cases, this irritation isn’t caused by Minoxidil itself but by other ingredients in the solution—particularly propylene glycol (PG), which is often used to dissolve and deliver Minoxidil to the scalp.

Clinical reviews have identified propylene glycol as one of the most common allergens in topical treatments, potentially causing symptoms such as itching, dryness, redness, and flaking.

PG-Free Minoxidil

If you have found Minoxidil Spray does not agree with your scalp, you could look into a propylene glycol-free 5% Minoxidil solution to minimise the risk of irritation while maintaining the same clinical effectiveness.

Alternatively, Minoxidil is available as an oral capsule. Taking Minoxidil orally will avoid the risk of experiencing local irritation.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to treating male pattern hair loss, 5% Minoxidil remains the most effective and reliable strength approved by the MHRA. While higher concentrations might seem appealing, the evidence doesn’t currently support them as safer or more effective alternatives.
