The Origins and Benefits of Korean Ginseng

Korean Ginseng - sometimes known as Panax Ginseng - is a slow-growing plant species found in different parts of the world. It has been favoured for its medicinal benefits for centuries and can be used to treat a broad range of medical conditions. Below, we explore the origins of this popular plant and explain how you can use Korean ginseng to improve your health and wellbeing.

Where does Korean Ginseng come from?

In spite of its name, Korean Ginseng actually comes from Shangdang, China. In fact, research has traced it back to the first century BC, during the Han Dynasty. There are several species of ginseng, and the plant grows in various parts of the world today, from China to the Russian far east. It does well in colder climates and grows naturally in the mountains, where it is traditionally hand-picked by growers. Due to its use and medicinal properties, wild ginseng is extinct in China and is globally endangered. Therefore, ginseng today is often cultivated in fields, as opposed to growing in the wild.

What are the benefits of Korean ginseng?

Korean ginseng has been a popular ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. The health benefits of ginseng come from two compounds - gintonin and ginsenosides, which combine and complement one another. Thanks to these compounds, Korean ginseng has the following health benefits:

Reduces inflammation

Korean ginseng is known to be high in antioxidants, and studies have found that it can reduce inflammation, particularly in people with skin conditions such as eczema. Although further study in humans is required, the signs are promising, and the anti-inflammatory properties of ginseng could help with a range of medical ailments.

Improves cognitive function

Several studies have found that Korean ginseng can have a positive impact on memory, brain function, and mood. While research is most promising as far as short-term memory is concerned, a 2018 study also discovered that ginseng supplements had a beneficial impact on the general cognition of older adults. It’s thought that this is due to the antioxidant properties mentioned above. To make the most of these potential benefits, we’ve included Korean ginseng in our popular Brain Health Supplement, working alongside the likes of L-Tyrosine, Choline, and Guarana to help sharpen your focus and improve your everyday productivity.

Enhances the immune system

Another potential benefit of Korean ginseng is that it may strengthen the immune system, particularly in your body’s fight against certain cancers. One study found that Korean ginseng contributed positively to the reduction of symptoms and the boosting of immune functions of patients who were recovering from stomach cancer. Again, further study is required to say conclusively, but the signs that Korean ginseng boosts the immune system are encouraging.

As well as these core benefits, Korean ginseng may also lower blood sugar, fight tiredness and fatigue, and could improve erectile dysfunction. As such, it’s little surprise that this plant is highly sought after and has been used in TCM practices for centuries.
