Where Does Guarana Come From and What Are the Benefits?

Native to the Amazon basin, guarana is a plant that has a broad range of health benefits. It is one of nine ingredients present in our nootropics supplement, alongside the likes of L-Tyrosine, Korean Ginseng, and Thiamine. Below, we take a look at the origins of guarana and explain how it can potentially help your health and wellbeing.

The origins of guarana

Native to Brazil, guarana grows deep in the Amazon basin and is a climbing plant that produces fruit of a similar size to a coffee berry. Despite growing in the forest, it is intensively farmed in some regions of South America and has been used by Amazon natives for generations for its various medicinal properties. Historically, guarana fruits were pounded into a powder, which was then kneaded into dough or worked into a drink. Today, it is still widely used as a powder and often comes in supplement form.

The benefits of guarana

The fruit of the guarana tree has a multitude of potential health benefits. It has five times more caffeine than coffee and is exceptionally rich in antioxidant compounds. These work to neutralise harmful free radicals that can lead to a broad range of infections, diseases, and cancers. Promising studies have found that the antioxidant properties of guarana have resulted in a reduction in the risk of heart disease, although further studies are required before conclusions are drawn.

Another significant benefit of guarana is that it has the potential to sharpen focus and boost energy levels, largely down to the high levels of caffeine found within. Research shows that guarana has a positive impact on your ability to learn and retain information, with a study noting that people who took a supplement before an exam scored higher than those who were given a placebo.

As well as these impressive cognitive benefits, guarana may also assist with weight loss, relieve chronic diarrhoea, boost heart health, and provide pain relief. When you take all of these factors into account, it’s easy to see why this native Brazilian plant has been used for its medicinal purposes for generations.
