Lots of men don’t see self-care as being masculine: the idea of meditating in a bath enriched with essential oils isn’t every guy’s idea of manhood. However, that’s kind of the whole point - there’s no one way to do self-care. It’s important to remember that self-care just means looking after yourself and only you’ll know how to do that. So, whilst some men might choose meditation in the bath, others might choose walking the dog or going for a run.
Like many things in life, self-care is about balance. In other words, you need to make sure that you’re looking after your mind as much as your body. We know plenty of men think that going to the gym, playing sports or going for a run is enough to keep you healthy - they’re wrong. Whilst fitness is important, you need to make sure that your mind is in good shape too.
It might be a bit lame to talk about but to achieve balanced self-care we need to explore the way we think and feel. Perhaps there are parts of ourselves that we don’t like, or maybe there are things we would like to change in our lives. We need to own who we really are in order to move forward in our lives. (Cliché , we know!)
Whilst taking the time to think about how we are feeling is a good thing, it won’t have a positive impact without acting upon it. If there are things we feel uncomfortable with, we need to make changes. The changes you make are up to you and will differ from man to man. If there are two men that are feeling stressed in the workplace, one might decide to start a morning running regime, the other might take 15 minutes at lunch to meditate.
Self-care is personal and not every man will do it in the same way; acknowledging the problem, accepting it and finding your own solution is the name of the game. Remember, self-care is just a complicated name for looking after yourself. The sooner that men realise that they can tailor their own regime to look after their physical and mental health, the sooner we can all start looking after ourselves properly.
