What is a widow's peak hairline?

11 November 2021
2-minute read

From low hairlines to cowlicks, hairlines can come in all shapes and sizes. One of the most distinctive hairlines has to be the widow’s peak, which plenty of men around the world develop. But what exactly is a window’s peak hairline and is it an indication of male pattern hair loss?

What is a widow's peak hairline?

A widow’s peak is a distinctive V-shaped point mostly found in the middle of the forehead. The degree to which the peak points can vary too - while some may have a very prominent peak, many men have a smaller peak. Dating back to 1833, the expression widow’s peak originated due to the likeness to the peak of a widow’s hood, with the hairline therefore seen as an omen of early widowhood. Don’t worry though - those negative connotations have well and truly disappeared, mainly thanks to popular actors (such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kit Harrington) unashamedly sporting their widow’s peak.

How do I know it isn’t male pattern hair loss?

For many men, the widow’s peak is an indication of a receding hairline and can cause some panic. However, a widow’s peak isn’t necessarily a sign that you’re losing your hair and may have been a normal part of your hairline for your whole life. Even so, it’s important to keep on top of your hairline, in order to treat your hair loss as early as possible. If your widow’s peak is receding back towards your temples, it’s time to have a deeper look into the rate of potential hair loss. We suggest heading to the mirror every week or so and taking a clear, well-lit photo each time. When comparing the results after a month and a half, you should be able to see clear changes if you’re suffering from a receding hairline.

How do I treat male pattern baldness?

If you’re noticing those clear changes in your hairline, our hair loss treatments could give your hair the helping hand it needs to flourish again. These treatments contain Finasteride and Minoxidil, two scientifically proven medications that work together to lower the effects of the hormone DHT (the main reason for thinning hair). When taken and applied every day, you could potentially see the effects of our hair loss treatment within a year of starting. If you want to give yourself the best chance of seeing brilliant results, our full works treatment plan was designed for you, featuring Biotin and DHT-blocking Shampoo. Don’t just take it from us though - our testimonial page features a variety of happy men who’ve helped their hair using our treatments.

Remember - a widow’s peak isn’t an immediate indication of male pattern hair loss. The shape and size of your hairline depends on a variety of genetic factors, but if you’re concerned about potential hair loss, get in touch with our consultants today.
